Mid-State Litho is an authorized Challenge Machinery dealer. Challenge has been building production-tier paper cutters, book trimmers, paper drills, joggers, and padding presses in Grand Rapids, Michigan since 1870, and MSL has stocked, installed, and serviced Challenge equipment from our Grand Blanc, Michigan facility since 1984. Challenge equipment is on the floor of commercial print shops, in-plant binderies, mailrooms, and book manufacturers across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and our factory-trained technicians keep it running.

Our Challenge catalog covers the full production-finishing footprint a print shop or bindery uses every day. Hydraulic guillotine paper cutters: Champion 305 TC and Champion 370 TC for high-volume production, Titan 265 TC for mid-range hydraulic work, Titan 230 Pro and Titan 200 Pro for 20-inch to 23-inch sheet sizes. Book trimmers: CMT 130 TC desktop single-knife trimmer for short-run booklet work, CMT 330 TC compact three-knife trimmer for production booklet output. Paper drills: JF series single-spindle drill for everyday hole-drilling on letter and legal stock, MS-5 multi-spindle drill for binder-prep volume work. Paper joggers: iJog electric jogger for stack alignment ahead of cutting and drilling. Padding presses: Paddy Wagon production padding press, Mini-Padder for desktop pads. Cornering machines: SCM in manual and hydraulic configurations. We also stock Challenge knives, cutting sticks, drilling blocks, drill lubricant, clamp pads, and cornering knives and dies for the full production line.

The right Challenge cutter for a print shop depends on sheet size, daily volume, and whether a programmable backgauge earns its keep over a manual spinwheel. Our team will walk through the spec with you, run trade-in numbers on an older Challenge or non-Challenge cutter, and put the new machine on the floor with operator training and a service contract. Financing and leasing is available through Mitsubishi HC Capital and LEAF Commercial Capital.

Challenge Champion and Titan Hydraulic Paper Cutters

The Champion series is Challenge's flagship hydraulic guillotine line. The Champion 305 TC handles 30.5-inch sheet widths, programmable cuts, and the throughput a mid-volume commercial print shop runs through every day. The Champion 370 TC steps up to a 37-inch cut for B2 and larger sheet work and is the canonical choice for shops cutting wide-sheet digital and offset output. Both Champion machines run on hydraulic clamp and knife actuation, programmable backgauge, two-hand safety initiation, and Challenge's standard infrared light-curtain safety system.

The Titan series sits below Champion in cut width but shares the production-tier hydraulic build. Titan 265 TC is the 26.5-inch programmable hydraulic Challenge offers for shops that don't need a 30-inch cut but want full Champion-level controls. Titan 230 Pro covers 23-inch sheet sizes, and Titan 200 Pro is the 20-inch entry into hydraulic Challenge cutters, the right machine for an in-plant shop or bindery that has outgrown a tabletop electric cutter but doesn't need full production volume.

Sheet sizes covered across the lineup: 20, 23, 26.5, 30.5, and 37 inches. All five hydraulic Challenge models accept Challenge factory blades, clamp pads, and cutting sticks; we stock all three consumables for next-business-day shipping from our Michigan warehouse. Browse the full range of hydraulic guillotine paper cutters.

A note on knife policy: when a Challenge cutter blade dulls past spec, we change the knife. We do not sharpen it. Re-sharpening a Challenge guillotine blade can re-temper the steel and shift the cutting edge geometry past Challenge factory tolerance, which leads to inconsistent cuts and accelerated cutting-stick wear. We stock factory-spec replacement knives for every Champion and Titan model; a knife swap is a 30-minute service-call procedure and is covered under most MSL service contracts.

Challenge CMT Book Trimmers

Challenge's CMT line covers the post-binding trim pass for booklet, perfect-bound, and saddle-stitched book work. The CMT 130 TC is a desktop single-knife book trimmer built for short-run booklet trimming where the operator handles one face of the book block at a time. It is the right machine for an in-plant shop trimming sub-100-book runs, demand-print booklet output, or specialty book work where a full three-knife pass is overkill.

The CMT 330 TC is Challenge's compact three-knife trimmer. It takes a bound book block and trims the foot, head, and face in one pass. The CMT 330 TC is sized for the production-print and booklet shops that have outgrown a single-knife trimmer but don't need the floor print of a high-production three-knife system. It pairs cleanly with a Challenge Champion cutter on the front end of the binding line and with a perfect binder or saddle-stitcher upstream.

If you need a higher-throughput book trimmer than the CMT 330 TC, our book trimming collection covers production three-knife systems from Standard Horizon (HT-300 and HT-1000V) and Perfecta (BP SDY).

Challenge Paper Drills, Joggers, Padding Presses and Cornering Machines

Past the cutter and trimmer, Challenge equipment handles the rest of the production-finishing line.

Paper drills. The JF paper drill is Challenge's single-spindle workhorse for letter, legal, and standard-format hole-drilling work. The MS-5 is the multi-spindle counterpart, set up to drill multi-hole patterns in one stroke for binder, presentation, and proposal work. Both accept Challenge factory drill bits and lubricant, both of which we stock from our Michigan warehouse. For mechanical-binding prep, see our paper punching equipment.

Paper joggers. The Challenge iJog electric paper jogger aligns sheet stacks ahead of cutting, drilling, and binding. It is the upstream partner to a Champion or Titan cutter on a high-throughput finishing line. MSL stocks the full range of paper joggers.

Padding presses. The Paddy Wagon is Challenge's production-tier padding press for high-volume pad gluing: note pads, sales pads, NCR pads, and short-run booklet padding. The Mini-Padder is the desktop counterpart for low-volume pad work.

Cornering machines. The Challenge SCM corner-rounding machine is available in manual and hydraulic configurations. The hydraulic SCM handles production card and booklet cornering volumes; the manual SCM is sized for on-demand and short-run cornering. Both accept Challenge factory cornering knives and dies. We stock the full die-and-knife inventory.

Challenge Knives, Cutting Sticks, Drilling Blocks and Wear Parts

A production Challenge cutter, drill, or trimmer is a knife-and-stick consumable platform. We stock the wear parts that keep a Challenge machine in spec.

Knives. We carry factory-spec replacement knives for every Champion, Titan, CMT, and SCM model in the Challenge production lineup. Our policy on Challenge knives is plain: we change knives, we do not sharpen them. Re-sharpening a Challenge guillotine blade can re-temper the steel near the cutting edge and shift the bevel geometry past Challenge factory tolerance, which leads to inconsistent cuts, faster cutting-stick wear, and clamp-pressure issues. A factory-spec knife swap is a 30-minute service-call procedure and is covered under most MSL service contracts.

Cutting sticks. We stock cutting sticks in the standard Challenge Champion and Titan formats. Cutting sticks rotate four times before replacement; we recommend a stick rotation at every knife change.

Drilling blocks and drill lubricant. The Challenge 3-inch drilling block fits the JF and MS-5 drill stations; we stock the block, the matching drill lubricant, and Challenge factory drill bits in the common diameters.

Cornering knives and dies. The Challenge SCM cornering line uses model-specific knives and dies; we stock both for the production cornering radii.

Clamp pads, springs, and small wear parts. We carry the small-parts inventory that keeps a Challenge machine on the floor between scheduled service.

How to Choose a Challenge Cutter: Manual, Electric, Hydraulic and Programmable

A Challenge cutter is a 15-to-30-year machine. The right model is the one that fits your sheet size, your daily volume, and whether your operator wants a programmable backgauge or a hand-spun spinwheel. Four axes matter.

Sheet size. A print shop running letter and legal cuts can run a 20-inch Titan 200 Pro or a 23-inch Titan 230 Pro. A shop that runs SRA3, B3, or 12 by 18 digital output should look at the 26.5-inch Titan 265 TC at a minimum. Wide-sheet shops cutting 13 by 19 digital, B2 offset, or production envelope work move up to the Champion 305 TC at 30.5 inches or the Champion 370 TC at 37 inches.

Daily volume. A bindery cutting 200 lifts a day can stay on a manual or electric cutter. A bindery cutting 800-plus lifts a day needs hydraulic clamp and knife actuation: the operator's hands and shoulders cannot run a manual cutter at that volume without injury risk and consistency drift. Hydraulic Challenge models (Titan 265 TC, Champion 305 TC, Champion 370 TC) are the production-volume answer.

Programmable vs manual backgauge. A programmable hydraulic Challenge cutter stores cut sequences and runs them back automatically. A manual Challenge cutter requires the operator to spin the backgauge to each cut position. Programmable pays for itself within 18 months on any shop running more than three job changeovers a day; below that volume, the manual is the lower-total-cost-of-ownership choice.

Trade-in vs new. MSL takes trade-ins on older Challenge equipment (and on non-Challenge cutters) toward a new Challenge purchase. We will inspect the trade-in machine on-site, give you a written value, and credit it against the new-machine quote. If the trade-in still has useful service life, we may also resell it through our used-equipment channel.
